Do you have a physical disability? If yes - please contact us NOW! Powerlifting is one of the fastest growing Paralympics sports, there are now 115 countries participating with 5000 registered athletes on five continents!
The sport is adapted from non-disabled powerlifting, concentrating solely on the bench-press. An athlete gets 3 attempts on stage to lift their maximum weight. Powerlifting is a weight category sport meaning that there are medals to be won across 10 different categories depending your bodyweight. These categories range from <48kg to 100+ kg for men, while for women, the lowest weight class is <40kg all the way up to 82.5+ kg. The Powerlifting is open to a wide variety of disability groups or do you know someone who is already training down the gym
These are as follows:
- Amputee: Double or single above knee amputations. Double or single below knee amputations.
- Athletes with spinal cord lesion, injury, spina bifida and polio
- Dwarfs: The maximum height for a dwarf to meet minimum disability is 4 feet 9 inches or 145 cms. The athlete must exhibit other disabilities besides being of small stature, therefore excluding a pituitary dwarf.
- Les autres: A motor paresis of the lower extremity.
- Athletes with Cerebral Palsy
Lifters must be able to fully extend their arms with no more than a 20% loss of extension through the elbows and be able to fully grip and control the bar.
All potential powerlifting athletes must have reached their 14th birthday.
*If an athlete has significantly impaired kinesiology of the upper body which when viewed by the classification team a potential high risk for injury, this athlete may not be permitted to compete within the sport of powerlifting.
