GB Athletes Dominate British Senior Championships

GREAT Britain Weightlifting team members Peter Kirkbride and Natasha Perdue were named best lifters at the British Senior Championships at Lilleshall National Sports Centre on Saturday.

 

 

The pair won their respective categories with ease, and came out on top using the Sinclair points method which factors in an athlete’s body weight.

 

Kirkbride, the 23-year-old Commonwealth Games silver medallist from Kilmarnock, coming back into form after injury snatched 140kg and managed 180 in the clean and jerk to total 320kg in the men’s 94kg class.

 

And Perdue, 35 and from Swansea, won the women’s 69kg category with a snatch of 92kg and a clean and jerk of 111kg to total 203kg.

 

Londoner Jo Calvino won the 53kg class, showing the kind of form which won her selection for England at last year’s Commonwealth Games. She lifted 68kg and 91kg respectively for a 159kg total.

 

Birmingham’s Jaswant Shergill was crowned men’s 56kg class champion with a 189kg total (83kg and 106kg), while GB athlete Gareth Evans, the 25-year-old from Holyhead, was top in the 62kg category with 245kg (110kg and 135kg).

 

Fellow GB team members Chris Freebury (Derby Power) and Alex Collier (Team Manchester) were first and second in the men’s 69kg class. Freebury totalled 241kg (115kg and 126kg), while Collier – five years his junior at just 17 years old – managed 231kg (104kg and 127kg).

 

Another GB athlete, Helen Jewell (Ivybridge) won the women’s 63kg class with a total of 183kg (80kg and 103kg), while Kathryn Davis of Crystal Palace won the over 75kg category, totalling 152kg (68kg and 84kg).

 

Jack Oliver (Europa) from Sidcup won the over-75kg class, lifting 285kg to beat fellow GB athlete Graeme Kane (Kilmarnock) into second by 19kg.

 

In the men’s 85kg class, 26-year-old Irishman Kevin D’Arcy won with a total of 278kg (120kg and 158kg), just edging out 17-year-old GB team member Sonny Webster by 1kg.

 

Oldbury’s Hannah Powell won the women’s 48kg class, the GB team member lifting a total of 130kg (55kg and 75kg) to beat up and coming 17-year-old Stephanie McDiarmid (Gladiators).

 

Other winners included Cardinal Pole’s Kim Pham who won the 58kg class with a total of 110kg, while Georgi Black lifted a total of 169kg to win the women’s 75kg class.

 

Brunel’s Vasyl Kruk was crowned men’s 105kg category champion with a total of 295kg, while Warley’s John Hanna won the men’s over-105kg event with 290kg (130kg and 160kg).
