OLYMPIC HOPEFULS HEAD TO BRISTOL

THE cream of English weightlifting will be in action in the Tri Nations Tournament against Norway and Sweden on Saturday, which is being staged in Bristol this year.

The annual event is always popular with athletes and spectators alike, and after being staged overseas for the previous two years the 2012 event is being held at the Empire Sports Club in Bristol.

Several of the athletes who will compete for England will be hoping to hit the Olympic qualification standard and give their hopes of competing at the London Olympics a massive boost.

Jack Oliver from Sidcup and Halil Zorba from London will compete for England in the senior men’s competition, while Birmingham’s Hannah Powell and Zoe Smith from London are the senior female entrants.

Promising junior weightlifters Sonny Webster (Bristol) and Shaun Clegg (Manchester) will also lift, while the English Under-17s are Chi Chea from Woking and Didcot’s Alexander Johnson.

Spectators are welcome to the event, which begins at 1pm.
