Young weightlifter shows promise at European Senior Championships Featured

DESPITE being just 19 years old, Welsh weightlifter Darius Jokarzadeh finished a superb ninth in the European Senior Championships in Albania last weekend.

The Cardiff-based 105kg+ athlete broke six British records with his personal best performances, setting new marks for snatch, clean and jerk, and total in both Under-20 and Under-23 age categories.

After starting with a comfortable 165kg snatch he went on to lift 173kg and narrowly missed out on 178kg. He then recorded three good lifts at the clean and jerk, starting with 190kg, progressing to 197kg and finishing with a record 202kg.

His total of 375kg is an improvement of 14kg on his own Under-20 and Under-23 records. He finished top in the B group, and was ninth overall once the A Group lifters are added, despite being the second youngest competitor in the competition.

“Seeing how I've improved from last year and the closing gap between me and the top lifters is really motivating,” said Jokarzadeh, who is also due to compete in the World Junior Championships next month.

“This was a warm-up competition for the World Junior Championships, so the weights were conservative. I've come out knowing I have a lot more in the tank for the worlds!”
