The BWL World Class programmes funded by UK Sport have clear performance targets that need to be achieved:-
Weightlifting Performance Targets:
- A female lifter in the medal zone and 2 female lifters in “A” finals in the London 2012 Olympics.
- A competitive team of 3 men and 2 women at the London 2012 Olympics.
IPC Powerlifting Performance Targets:
- 1-2 medals at the London 2012 Paralympics.
BWL WCP Programme Application procedures:
1 All athletes wishing to be considered for selection onto BWL WCP Performance Squads must make a formal
application to be included on the Programme and to receive support via one of the following three
options:
1. BWL HPC based (Leeds) - BWL Head Coach led
2. Home based - BWL Head Coach led
3. Home based - Personal Coach led
2 Applicants for the programme will be considered against the performance matrix - IPC Powerlifting matrix
Weightlifting matrix, which is based on athlete’s ability to help BWL achieve its UK Sport performance
targets in at the Olympics and Paralympics in 2012, 2016 and beyond.
3 The application process is open to all lifters eligible to represent Great Britain at the Olympic or Paralympic
Games.
4 Only athletes who have formally applied to be part of the BWL WCP programme and been accepted will
receive support through the BWL WCP Programme.
5 Athletes will be offered a place on the BWL WCP programmes based on two factors:
- Their potential to contribute to the BWL performance targets for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, and beyond
- Clearly demonstrating “world class” athlete characteristics and traits which include adhering to agreed training programmes (either BWL Head Coach or Personal Coach led), ability to make technical changes, competition performances and attending agreed BWL WC Performance Camps.
6 Athletes’ continuation in the squad will be based on meeting agreed progression targets which contribute
to BWL performance goals as well as continuing to display the agreed BWL athlete behaviours.
7 Following the initial application, successful athletes will be asked to submit a more detailed application
including their agreed competition programme and targets. Support will be available from
BWL Performance staff to help them with this application process.
8 All applications, funding levels and athletes' continuation on the BWL WCP Programmes are assesed at regular
intervals by the BWL WC Performance Management Group for both IPC Powerlifting and Weightlifting.
